Let's Organically Cultivate a Paddy Field
For the second time on 18th of April 2021, we sow seeds on our paddy field. With the prior experience, we determined to avoid and mitigate each and every mistakes that we did last time. Therefor this time we received a solid head start for the upcoming work.
Preparing the land
Unlike the first time, we didn’t have a necessity to mow the unnecessary grass on the field since we sowed last time. Initially without plowing the field by using a tractor, we dig the field using human labor. After the plowing process, we need to leave the field for five days to get braised. This braising process will kill the grass and other wild unnecessary plants from the field. Yet just braising will not be enough. Even after the braising process, farmers need to uproot the leftover weeds and push those weeds inside the mud to prevent from further more spreading. Once farmers done with this whole process, they again leave the paddy field for another five days to get braised. This process will make sure there won't be a single weed after wards.
Fertilizing process
Main purpose of this project is to go organic and feed the right food for the society. Therefor we only use organic fertilizers. And also, we were able to buy reliable and trusted organic fertilizers from Sassrika Lanka Company.
Preparation of seeds
Before we sow the seeds, we need to go through series of processes to prepare the seeds for sowing. For that we need to soak the seeds in water for hours. This process gets differ from seed to seed. In our case, we bought “Gonabaru” seeds. Hence, we had to soak Gonabaru seeds in water for 24 hours. After that we need to put some weight on soaked seeds to fast track the process of seed germination. As mentioned earlier different seeds take different amount of time for the preparation. We kept weight on soaked gonabaru seeds for 36 hours.
Above preparation is a must. Once you follow the above process, plants grow faster than the weeds.
Initially we planned on sowing on April 13th. But unfortunately, seeds we bought didn’t grow or rather didn’t show any result in the seed germination process. Therefor we had to buy seeds again.
Sowing
On April 18th in the morning, we began to dig the field again since we couldn’t sow on the 13th. There were couple of weeds on the field to be removed. After the field preparation, we were successfully able to sow again.
Cultivation
For that we need to wait for another 4 months. After 4 months you'll be able to enjoy the produce of this paddy field.
